2011: A tremendous success!

It’s been another hugely successful year for Professional MotorSport World Expo. “Without question this has been our best show ever,” said Tony Robinson, show founder and CEO of UKI Media & Events, the company that organises the show and publishes Professional Motorsport World magazine. “The feedback from our exhibitors has been absolutely fantastic, with everybody citing the very high quality of the visitors and the fact that it really is a professional motorsport show and business environment. A lot of exhibitors are particularly pleased with the connections they are making with dealers and distributors, not just in Europe but from around the world.”

There was praise for the event from visitors, too. “I’ve come to the show for an overview of the high-tech machining capacity that’s available in Europe, and also to see a lot of the proprietary components that are available in motorsport,” said Andrew Morrison, a technical buyer for Red Bull Technology. “It provides a really good opportunity to further develop relationships with a lot of our European suppliers, which enhances our business.”

Among the exhibitors who noted the high quality of the leads they were getting was Albins Off Road Gear from Australia. Albins was exhibiting at Professional MotorSport World Expo for the first time, and used the show to introduce its new six-speed sequential transmission, the ST6, to the European market. This will be the control part for the 2013 V8 Supercars, but will have other applications such as GT racing too. The company also reported strong interest in its ring and pinions for older Porsche models, and is working on future gearbox products in cooperation with Zeroshift.

Tim Possingham, Albins’ marketing manager, commented, “It’s also a good event for exploring other technologies – shifting, bearings and materials – which can save us time and money, and help improve our products.”

Based rather closer to the show’s Cologne venue is Capricorn, which has recently moved its headquarters to Düsseldorf’s harbour area. The company’s composite technology manager, Arndt Hartelt, explained that an additional composites factory in Meuspath, close to the Nürburgring, will be constructed in 2012, with a likely start of production in 2013. It could be used to expand Capricorn’s existing pre-preg/autoclave business – with which it serves the likes of Volkswagen Motorsport and Team Lotus – or to make a big move into the field of resin transfer moulding (RTM); a final decision is expected soon.

Meanwhile at the opposite end of the show hall, a new feature of Professional MotorSport World Expo for 2011 was the Race Circuit Zone, a dedicated part of the exhibition with over 30 exhibitors showcasing circuit technologies, designs and concepts. Catching the eye through its sheer size was a new product from Spengler, the Marshal Protection Area. Built in four elements from the same FIA-approved concrete-barrier/debris-fence sections used elsewhere to line racetracks, the Marshal Protection Area is easily moved from location to location with a forklift truck.

“People have been saying it’s a great idea; that there’s nothing else like this on the market today,” said company chief, Bernd Spengler, adding that he’d had numerous serious enquiries on Day 1 of the show alone.

Fantastic first day for Professional MotorSport World Expo 2011!

Professional MotorSport World Expo got straight up to speed with a fantastic first day of business in Hall 7 at Koeln Messe. The day concluded with the gala dinner, where this year’s Awards were presented.

There were lots of new products and services on display at the show for the many visitors looking ahead to the 2012 motorsport season.

Global launch for Motul’s latest lubricants

Motul’s latest 300V range made its world debut in Köln Messe’s Hall 7 which features new technology and improved packaging. On display alongside John Bradshaw’s mighty Nissan dragster, these lubricants have Esters at their heart, coupled with other 100% synthetic base oils and a number of innovative additives. The line-up has been expanded to eight viscosities with the addition of 0W15 (for pure performance) and 0W40 (for optimized power and reliability).

Arcadius announces deal with RPD Motorsport

Sports management, marketing and branding consultancy Arcadius has reached agreement to acquire a minority interest in Formula Renault team, RPD Motorsport. The deal will allow RPD, which intends to add the UK Formula Renault Junior Series to its BARC FR team in 2012, to grow its business and provide a wider range of options to its clients: for full-season racing, testing programs, and one-off test days.

Gasoline performance injectors make show debut

PMW Expo exhibitor ASNU, known for its Diagnostic Injector Testing & Servicing System launched its new range of gasoline performance injectors at the 2011 show. Using one core injector and a range of specially designed adapter caps, an ASNU stockist can produce a set of injectors specific to an application and confirm their performance on the spot, without having to stock hundreds of different specifications.

IndyCar supply deal for SKF wheel hub unit bearings

SKF is to supply the angular contact ball bearings and the thin-section bearings to the new Dallara DW12 IndyCar chassis. Incorporated into the wheel hub unit, the bearings are designed to maximize the rigidity and reliability of the entire wheel hub unit system and can resist lateral accelerations of up to 4g. In addition to its relationship with Dallara, SKF has recently expanded its IndyCar involvement by becoming an associate sponsor of the No.3 Penske Racing machine, driven by Helio Castroneves.

New safety equipment from OMP

With its huge, race transporter-style booth, OMP Racing had one of the most eye-catching displays at Professional MotorSport World Expo. On show inside were three new product lines: ONE EVO (for car drivers), ONE EVO-K (for karters) and Workshop (for mechanics). The three-layer Dart race suit is also new for 2012 and is available in a number of different colors.

High-visibility data logger unveiled by GEMS

The success of LDS4 dashboard display – which has been used in 2011 by Peugeot Sport and FIA Formula Two, among others – has prompted the device’s maker, GEMS, to launch the DL10 display logger. Aimed at professional and club-level racers alike, the DL10 has 256MB of built-in data logging and uses the same AMOLED technology as the LDS4, meaning it is completely uninhibited by sunlight.

Fast stops from new racing wheel

After its 2011 Italian Rally Championship success with the factory Peugeot team and driver Paolo Andreucci, EVOCorse’s new QPS (Quick Pit Stop) wheels are to be made available to all customers for the 2012 season. EVOCorse claims that up to 30 seconds can be shaved from an emergency tire change using the QPS system. Other new products include a 1mm Thermo insulating plate for competition brakes, and EvoJack, a lightweight onboard jack designed for rally use.

Forum and workshops: standing room only!

Visitors packed into the workshop area on Day 1 to hear some fascinating presentations from the likes of Andrea Toso, who discussed the safety design of next year's Dallara IndyCar, Jonathan Culwick, who presented the rollcage concept for the new MINI WRC car, and Jonas Jarlmark, who gave an absorbing insight into racing Super 2000 touring cars. By midday it was a case of standing room only in this phenomenally popular workshop area, for which the day's program was rounded off by a 90-minute OptimumG session on data logging.
